About Darold Knowles

Chicago's #169 followed Knowles's 1976 season of 58 relief appearances, nine saves and a 2.89 ERA. Before spring training in 1977, the Cubs traded him to Texas for Gene Clines and cash. He worked 42 games for the Rangers, going 5-2 with four saves and a 3.22 ERA.

Darold Knowles pitched sixteen major-league seasons for seven franchises, making 765 appearances and recording 143 saves with a 3.12 ERA. The left-hander reached 71 appearances and 27 saves for Washington in 1970. With Oakland he became the first pitcher to appear in all seven games of a World Series, saving Games 1 and 7 against the Mets in 1973. He finished that Series with 6 1/3 innings and no earned runs, retiring Wayne Garrett for the final out. After his playing career, Knowles coached pitchers in the Cardinals, Phillies, Pirates and Blue Jays organizations, including eight years as a roving instructor for St. Louis. He was inducted into the Florida State League Hall of Fame and, in 2012, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
