About Jerry DaVanon

Late in 1976 DaVanon said he loved the city and the organization and hoped to be back with Houston the next year in the same utility role. On November 23, 1976, the Astros traded him and pitcher Larry Dierker to St. Louis for catcher Joe Ferguson and outfielder Bob Detherage, so card #283, which lists the Astros, predates the move. He played sparingly behind Mike Tyson and Don Kessinger for the Cardinals, going hitless in eight at-bats over nine games before his release on May 11.

Jerry DaVanon was a utility infielder who played parts of eight major league seasons with the San Diego Padres, St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles, California Angels, and Houston Astros. A product of Hoover High School in San Diego, he played at San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, and Westmont College before the Cardinals drafted him in a 1966 special-phase draft. He reached the majors with the expansion Padres, who had him on their first Opening Day roster in 1969. He played for five major league clubs, with the Cardinals acquiring him by trade three separate times, and settled in as a reserve who filled in at shortstop, second base, and third base. His best season came in 1976 with Houston, when he batted .290 with 20 RBI in 61 games while spelling Roger Metzger and Rob Andrews. He finished with a .234 career average over 262 games. After his release in 1977, he retired and made his home in Houston. He is the father of former big-league outfielder Jeff DaVanon.
