1977 Topps #127 Ron Fairly

About Ron Fairly
Oakland purchased Fairly's contract from St. Louis on September 14, 1976. He finished that season with 3 home runs and 10 RBI in 15 games for the Athletics. His 1977 Topps card, #127, carries the Athletics name. On February 24, 1977, Oakland traded him to the expansion Blue Jays for Mike Weathers and cash.
Ronald Ray Fairly grew up in Long Beach, California, and played center field for USC's 1958 College World Series champions. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a $75,000 bonus through scout Harold "Lefty" Phillips, choosing to stay near home despite a larger Chicago offer. Carl Furillo taught him how to play right field in National League parks; Fairly later wore Furillo's number 6 as a tribute. His 21 major league seasons included time with six clubs and All-Star selections for Montreal and Toronto. He finished with 1,913 hits, 215 home runs, 1,044 RBI and a .266 average. After playing, he broadcast games for the Angels, Giants and Mariners. Fairly died on October 30, 2019.
