About this card

This is one of the 26 team cards, one for each club. Twenty-four carry their manager; the two clubs that debuted in 1977, #113 Toronto Blue Jays and #597 Seattle Mariners, carry the manager and his coaches instead.

The story on this card

San Francisco finished 1976 at 74-88, fourth in the National League West and 28 games behind the Cincinnati Reds, but the larger story was whether the club would be in the city at all. Attendance at cold, windy Candlestick Park had fallen through the first half of the decade. In January 1976 owner Horace Stoneham agreed to sell the team for $13.25 million to a Toronto group that would have played at Exhibition Stadium. Instead Bob Lurie led a group that bought the Giants for $8 million. The 1976 crowds at Candlestick totaled 626,868, and Bill Rigney's club hit 85 home runs. John Montefusco went 16-14 with a 2.84 ERA and was an All-Star. Topps #211 shows the team with an inset of Joe Altobelli, the manager for 1977.
