About Fred Lynn

Lynn began 1977 on the disabled list from March 24 to May 6 with torn ligaments in his left ankle. He still played 129 games and hit .260 with 18 home runs and 76 RBI, and made his third All-Star team. Boston won 97 games and tied Baltimore for second in the AL East. His card is #210, with the All-Star designation on the front.

Fred Lynn was a left-handed center fielder who played 17 seasons (1974-1990) for the Red Sox, Angels, Orioles, Tigers and Padres, hitting .283 with 306 home runs. A three-time national champion at USC, he was a second-round Red Sox pick in 1973. In 1975 he became the first player to win Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in the same season, and on June 18 that year he hit three home runs and drove in 10 runs at Tiger Stadium. With fellow rookie Jim Rice he was dubbed one of the Gold Dust Twins. He earned four Gold Gloves and nine All-Star selections. Traded to California in January 1981, he was ALCS MVP in 1982 despite the Angels' loss, and in 1983 hit the only grand slam in All-Star Game history. Injuries from all-out play meant he never played more than 150 games in a season. He was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2002.
