About Bake McBride

McBride's #340 in 1978 shows him as a Phillie. He hit .269, the lowest average of his career, in 122 games, partly because of injuries and partly because manager Danny Ozark platooned him. He also hit 10 homers and stole 28 bases, and in a second straight NLCS loss to the Dodgers he homered again and batted .222.

Bake McBride was a left-handed hitting outfielder who won the 1974 National League Rookie of the Year Award with the St. Louis Cardinals and played for the 1980 world champion Philadelphia Phillies. The Cardinals took him in the 37th round of the 1970 draft after a tryout in which scouts timed him to first base and sent him to the outfield. He hit .299 over 11 seasons with 183 stolen bases, playing for the Cardinals, Phillies and Cleveland Indians from 1973 to 1983. Knee surgeries, shoulder trouble and a 1982 eye infection tied to contact lenses cut into several seasons. After he reached Philadelphia, Phillies fans nicknamed him Shake 'n Bake, and he hit a three-run home run in Game 1 of the 1980 World Series against Kansas City. After retiring he coached outfield and baserunning in the Mets' minor league system and later served as a Cardinals minor league hitting coach.
