1978 Topps #297 Warren Brusstar

About Warren Brusstar
Brusstar reached the majors on May 6, 1977, called up when Tug McGraw went down with an elbow injury. He appeared in 46 games, all in relief. He went 7-2 with a 2.65 ERA and three saves. He pitched in the NLCS that October as the Phillies lost to the Dodgers. Card #297 is his rookie card and lists him with Philadelphia.
Warren Brusstar was a right-handed middle reliever for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs from 1977 to 1985, finishing 28-16 with a 3.51 ERA and 14 saves in 340 games, none of them starts. He pitched in relief for the Phillies when they won the 1980 World Series, and he later pitched in the 1984 NLCS for the Cubs. Elbow and shoulder problems limited him to three seasons of more than 50 appearances. A Napa, California product, he was drafted by the Giants in 1970 and 1971, the Mets in 1973 and finally signed with the Phillies as a fourth-round pick in 1974 after playing at Fresno State. The White Sox bought him from Philadelphia on August 30, 1982, and on January 25, 1983 he and Steve Trout went to the Cubs for Scott Fletcher, Pat Tabler, Randy Martz and Dick Tidrow. He later became pitching coach at Napa Valley College, which inducted him into its athletic hall of fame in 2011.
