1978 Topps #296 Biff Pocoroba

About Biff Pocoroba
In the All-Star Game Pocoroba entered in the ninth inning as a defensive replacement, caught Bruce Sutter for two outs and recorded the last out with teammate Phil Niekro pitching. For the season he hit .242 with 6 home runs and 34 RBI and led NL catchers in range factor per game. Card #296 shows him with Atlanta.
Biff Pocoroba was a switch-hitting catcher who played his entire ten-season career, 1975 to 1984, for the Atlanta Braves. A 17th-round pick in 1971 out of Canoga Park High School in California, he came up through Wytheville, Greenwood and Savannah, and drew notice in 1975 spring training by throwing out 11 straight would-be base stealers. He debuted April 25, 1975, as a defensive replacement against San Diego. A contact hitter, he finished with more walks (182) than strikeouts (109) and was an All-Star in 1978. He also played third base, and in 1981 he played more games there than behind the plate while Bob Horner was hurt. His one postseason appearance was a 1982 NLCS at-bat in which he grounded out as the Cardinals swept the Braves. His last game was April 20, 1984, with career totals of 596 games, a .257 average and 21 home runs. He later ran a sausage business, Sausage World, in Lilburn, Georgia, with his brothers.
