The story on this card
The 1977 strikeout race is the subject of #206, which pairs Phil Niekro of the Atlanta Braves with Nolan Ryan of the California Angels. Niekro struck out 262 in 330 1/3 innings for the Braves' worst club in more than 40 years. He started 43 games, went 16-20 and also led the National League in innings pitched and complete games. Ryan fanned 341 in 299 innings. He went 19-16 with a 2.77 ERA and 22 complete games, and The Sporting News named him its Pitcher of the Year.
Phil Niekro, Knucksie, rode a knuckleball through 24 seasons to 318 wins, a 3.35 ERA, five All-Star teams and five Gold Gloves, nearly all of it with the Braves; the only knuckleballer to reach 300 wins, he entered the Hall of Fame in 1997. Nolan Ryan was the flame-throwing "Ryan Express," a Mets farmhand who became baseball's all-time strikeout king, setting career records for strikeouts (5,714) and no-hitters (seven) over 27 seasons with the Mets, Angels, Astros and Rangers.
