1978 Topps #93 Bobby Cox

About this card
This is one of the 25 manager cards. Team cards and manager cards are separate cards this year: every club has a team card, and every club except the Milwaukee Brewers has a manager card - George Bamberger was hired in late January 1978, too late to be included.
About Bobby Cox
Cox replaced Dave Bristol as Atlanta Braves manager for 1978, taking over a club that had posted the worst record in the National League. His 1978 Topps manager card, #93, shows him with the Braves. His first Atlanta team went 69-93 and finished sixth and last in the West, with 20-year-old rookie third baseman Bob Horner and 22-year-old first baseman Dale Murphy in the lineup.
Robert Joe Cox was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1959, spending seven seasons in the Dodgers, Cubs and Braves farm systems before the Braves traded him to the New York Yankees in December 1967. He debuted for New York on April 14, 1968, as a pinch-hitter, and as the regular third baseman that year batted .229 with 7 home runs in 135 games. Knee injuries limited him to 85 games in 1969, which closed a two-year playing career at a .225 average. Cox began managing in the Yankees' farm system in 1971 and coached first base for the Yankees' 1977 World Series winners. He managed Atlanta and the Toronto Blue Jays, then returned to the Braves' dugout in 1990 and led them to 14 consecutive division titles from 1991 to 2005 and the 1995 World Series championship. He won four Manager of the Year awards, holds the all-time record for manager ejections, and saw the Braves retire his No. 6. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a manager in 2014.
