About Chuck Scrivener

The Tigers cut Scrivener in late March 1978, and his final professional season was back at Evansville: 92 games and a .262 average with nine home runs. He also had 21 doubles, three triples and 46 RBI. In December Bill Lajoie phoned to tell him he had been released after 11 years in the organization; he recalled his heart pounding so hard he could hardly hear the words. He signed with Toronto in 1979 and injured his knee. Topps #94 carried him with Detroit.

Chuck Scrivener was a Detroit Tigers infielder from 1975 to 1977, a 5-foot-9 right-handed hitter who played shortstop in 89 of his 145 major league games and second base in 51. He hit .190 with two home runs and 18 RBI. Born in Alexandria, Virginia, he won the 1966 Maryland Scholastic Association batting title at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute with a .529 average, and attended the Community College of Baltimore. Detroit drafted him in the second round of the January 1968 draft's secondary phase. Detroit sportswriter Jim Hawkins called him 'the forgotten man in the Tigers' farm system.' His best minor league year came in 1975 at Evansville, where he became the starting shortstop and had 23 doubles, 10 home runs and 65 RBI. The Triplets won the Junior World Series, and he reached Detroit that September. In 1976 he replaced Gene Michael as the Tigers' utility infielder and hit his first major league home run on August 8. His highest annual salary was $28,000, and after baseball he sold napkins and toilet paper in Detroit for Fort Howard Paper Co. His uncle, Jack Crouch, played for the St. Louis Browns and Cincinnati Reds from 1930 to 1933.
