1978 Topps #75 Dick Ruthven

About Dick Ruthven
Ruthven went 7-13 with a 4.23 ERA in 1977 for a Braves club that lost 101 games, and he appears with Atlanta on card #75. He won three games to start the year, then tore an ankle tendon, missed more than two months and lost eight straight after returning. He finished with 25 games and 23 starts. In April 1978 he said he had something to prove, and on June 15, with a 2-6 record, he went back to Philadelphia for Gene Garber.
Dick Ruthven was a right-handed starting pitcher who worked 14 major league seasons, from 1973 to 1986, for the Phillies, Braves and Cubs. A Fresno State star who struck out 171 batters in 1971 and was named a first-team All-American in 1972, he signed with Philadelphia as the first overall pick of the January 1973 secondary draft and went straight from campus to the majors. He made two National League All-Star teams, in 1976 with Atlanta and in 1981 with the Phillies, and won a career-high 17 games for the 1980 world champions, pitching two shutout innings in relief to win Game 5 of that year's NLCS. Quarrels with Ted Turner and Pat Corrales preceded trades, and he finished with the Cubs, who won the 1984 NL East title. He retired after a rare vascular condition and experimental surgery. His career line was 123-127 with a 4.14 ERA, 1,145 strikeouts, 61 complete games and 17 shutouts in 2,109 innings.
