1978 Topps #242 Barry Bonnell

About Barry Bonnell
Bonnell's second season in Atlanta was a step back from the .300 rookie year behind him. He hit .240 with one home run and stole 12 bases. He played 105 games in the outfield and 15 at third base. His rookie card, Topps #242, lists him with the Atlanta Braves.
Barry Bonnell was a right-handed outfielder who played ten seasons in the majors, with the Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners between 1977 and 1986. He played baseball and basketball at Ohio State on a full scholarship and left college during his senior year; the Philadelphia Phillies had taken him first overall in the 1975 January secondary-phase draft. He debuted for Atlanta against Pittsburgh on May 4, 1977. His best season came with Toronto in 1983, when he hit .318 with 10 home runs and 54 RBI. Peers called him a "money hitter": he hit four grand slams and led his teams in game-winning hits nearly every year he played. He was also known for a strong, accurate throwing arm. After a trade to Seattle in 1984 he contracted Valley fever in spring training and developed pneumonia, and it took a year to recover. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he introduced Braves teammate Dale Murphy to the faith.
