The story on this card

Card #207 recorded the 1977 earned run average leaders: John Candelaria of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Frank Tanana of the California Angels. Candelaria went 20-5 with a major-league-best 2.34 ERA over 230 2/3 innings, and 1977 was his only 20-win year and his only All-Star selection. Tanana led the American League with a 2.54 ERA in 241 1/3 innings. He went 15-9 with seven shutouts and 20 complete games, and The Sporting News named him its All-Star left-hander, as it had in 1976. The card belongs to the League Leaders subset.

Left-hander John Candelaria, the 6-foot-7 Candy Man, won 177 games over 19 seasons. He threw a 1976 no-hitter and led the majors with a 2.34 ERA in 1977 for Pittsburgh, and won the 1979 World Series with the Pirates. Frank Tanana was a left-hander who began as Nolan Ryan's partner on the California Angels staff and finished his 21 years with the Mets and Yankees in 1993. Shoulder trouble turned him from a hard thrower into a pitcher of slower pitches and deception.
