About this card

The story on this card

Chuck Tanner's first Pittsburgh club won 96 games in 1977 and finished second in the National League East, five games behind the 101-win Phillies. Tanner arrived in November 1976 in the trade that sent Manny Sanguillen to Oakland. Dave Parker hit .338 with 21 home runs and 88 RBI and started in the outfield for the National League in the All-Star Game. John Candelaria went 20-5 with a 2.34 ERA. Goose Gossage, acquired from the White Sox in December 1976, saved 26 games with a 1.62 ERA over 72 appearances, and both pitchers joined Parker on the All-Star roster. Willie Stargell hit his 400th career home run against the Phillies on June 30. The season was also the first with players' last names on the backs of Pirates jerseys. Candelaria also appears on League Leaders card #207, and the Pirates team card is #606 in the 1978 Topps set.
