1978 Topps #605 Rick Rhoden

About Rick Rhoden
Rhoden moved to the bullpen for six weeks in August and September 1978 as rookie Bob Welch emerged, but he started 23 games and finished 10-8 with a 3.66 ERA. In Game Four of the NLCS he relieved Doug Rau in the sixth inning and pitched four innings, allowing one run on Bake McBride's home run. Card #605 pictures him with the Dodgers.
Rick Rhoden was a right-handed starter who won 151 games over 16 major league seasons with the Dodgers (1974-1978), Pirates (1979-1986), Yankees (1987-1988) and Astros (1989). Los Angeles took him in the first round of the 1971 draft out of a Florida high school, and he reached the majors on July 5, 1974. He finished with a 3.59 ERA and 1,419 strikeouts and won Silver Slugger awards as a hitter in 1984, 1985 and 1986. He came up as a power pitcher and later relied on command and deception, and in his later years opponents accused him of scuffing the ball. On June 11, 1988, he started at designated hitter for the Yankees, the first pitcher to do so since the AL adopted the rule. After baseball he became a tournament golfer, played on the Champions Tour, and won the American Century Championship celebrity event eight times.
