1978 Topps #228 Manny Mota

About Manny Mota
During a March 1977 exhibition in the Dominican Republic, Mota hit a two-run home run off Tom Seaver at Estadio Quisqueya. The Dodgers won 4-0. He collected 15 hits in 38 regular-season at-bats that year. His 1978 Topps Dodgers card was #228.
Manny Mota signed with the New York Giants in 1957 for a $400 bonus. His minor league path took him from Michigan City to Tacoma before his major league debut with San Francisco in 1962. He played twenty major league seasons and batted .304, becoming a pinch-hitting specialist with the Dodgers. He established the major league career pinch-hit record in 1979; Lenny Harris broke it in 2001. Mota coached Los Angeles from 1980 through 2013 and also worked on its Spanish-language broadcasts. His father, Andres, gave him the nickname El Chory, roughly meaning Shorty. Two sons, Andy and Jose, also reached the majors.
