1978 Topps #227 Al Fitzmorris

About Al Fitzmorris
His #227 card still reads Cleveland, but he changed teams during the 1978 season. Used almost entirely as a reliever, with 2 starts in 16 games and a 3.13 ERA between the two clubs, he was released by the Indians on July 13. The Angels signed him on July 18, and his final major league appearance came September 29.
Al Fitzmorris was a right-handed pitcher who worked 10 major league seasons, 1969 to 1978, for the Kansas City Royals, Cleveland Indians and California Angels. Born in Buffalo, he signed with the White Sox as a free agent in 1966 and was taken by the new Royals in the 1968 expansion draft. He won a career-high 16 games for Kansas City in 1975. Toronto took him with the 13th pick of the 1976 expansion draft and traded him to Cleveland the same day for catcher Alan Ashby and Doug Howard. He finished 77-59 with a 3.65 ERA in 288 games and retired at 33. He stayed in the Kansas City area and supported local charities until his death in 2024.
