1978 Topps #351 Jeff Torborg

About this card
This is one of the 25 manager cards. Team cards and manager cards are separate cards this year: every club has a team card, and every club except the Milwaukee Brewers has a manager card - George Bamberger was hired in late January 1978, too late to be included.
About Jeff Torborg
Torborg began 1977 as Cleveland's bullpen coach and took over the Indians in June, when Frank Robinson was fired with the club at 26-31. His first two games as manager were a doubleheader sweep of Detroit, 4-2 and 4-0. Cleveland finished fifth, and his 1977 record at the helm was 45-59. He appears on #351 in the 1978 Topps manager subset.
Jeff Torborg was a defensive catcher who could handle a pitching staff, playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels from 1964 to 1973. A Rutgers All-American who hit .537 in his final college season, he signed with the Dodgers in 1963 and spent most of his career as a backup, not becoming a starter until 1973, his last season. Torborg caught three no-hitters for three different pitchers: Sandy Koufax's 1965 perfect game, Bill Singer's 1970 no-hitter and the first of Nolan Ryan's seven no-hitters in 1973. That made him one of a handful of catchers to catch a no-hitter in each league. He finished with a .214 average, 8 home runs and 101 RBI. After his playing days Torborg became a manager, coach and broadcaster. He led the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins, and won American League Manager of the Year with the White Sox in 1990.
