About Wayne Garland

Garland hurt his arm in his first spring training game of 1978 and kept pitching after a cortisone shot. After six starts, in which he went 2-3 with a 7.89 ERA, a torn rotator cuff was diagnosed and he had surgery. He sat out the rest of the year. Card #174 pictures him with the Indians.

Wayne Garland was a right-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in the majors, 1973 to 1981, with the Baltimore Orioles and the Cleveland Indians, finishing 55-66 with a 3.89 ERA. A Nashville native, he was drafted by the Pirates in 1968 and the Cardinals in 1969 without signing before the Orioles took him in the 1969 secondary draft. He won 20 games and lost seven for Baltimore in 1976, then became one of the first free agents of the Seitz era and signed with the Indians. He turned to the knuckleball late in his career to work around shoulder injuries and was released after the 1981 season. He later coached in the minors, including as pitching coach for the Nashville Sounds and in the Pirates organization.
