1978 Topps #101 Sid Monge

About Sid Monge
Monge is pictured with Cleveland on #101 in the 1978 Topps set. That season he pitched 48 games, almost all in relief, going 4-3 with six saves and a 2.76 ERA. His best memory as a player came on May 17, when he threw six scoreless innings against the Yankees and allowed only a Thurman Munson bloop single.
Sid Monge was a left-handed reliever from Agua Prieta, Sonora, who pitched in the majors from 1975 to 1984 for the California Angels, Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres and Detroit Tigers. He moved to Brawley, California, at 16, and the Angels drafted him in the 24th round in 1970. His best season was 1979 with Cleveland, when he went 12-10 with a 2.40 ERA, 19 saves and 76 appearances, and became the first Mexican-born pitcher named to a major league All-Star team. He was 7-1 for the 1982 Phillies and 10-3 in 1983 between Philadelphia and San Diego. Over ten seasons he went 49-40 with a 3.53 ERA and 56 saves in 435 games. He later coached in the St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers farm systems, served as pitching coach of the Sultanes de Monterrey in 2010, coached third base for the Venados de Mazatlan in the Mexican Winter League, and entered the Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame on June 14, 2004.
