About this card

The story on this card

Cleveland slipped from 81-78 in 1976 to 71-90 in 1977 and finished fifth in the AL, missing the playoffs for the 23rd consecutive season. Frank Robinson, who became the first Black manager in major league history as the Indians' player-manager in 1975, was fired on June 19 with the club at 26-31. Jeff Torborg took over and went 45-59. On May 30, Dennis Eckersley threw a no-hitter against the California Angels, striking out 12 and allowing two baserunners. The Indians scored 676 runs, hit 100 home runs and drew 900,365 to Cleveland Stadium, in the club's 46th season there. The Indians team card is #689 in the 1978 Topps set. Cleveland's two Hall of Famers that year were Eckersley, who went 14-13 with a 3.53 ERA, and Robinson.
