1978 Topps #690 Mickey Rivers

About Mickey Rivers
Rivers hit .265 in 1978, with 11 home runs and 25 steals. He went 5 for 11 in the ALCS against Kansas City and 6 for 18 as the Yankees beat the Dodgers again in the World Series. In the one-game playoff at Fenway Park he reportedly gave Bucky Dent a bat with a home run in it, and Dent homered over the Green Monster. His card is #690.
Mickey Rivers was a left-handed center fielder and leadoff hitter who played 15 seasons, 1970 to 1984, for the Angels, Yankees and Rangers. A Miami native who attended Miami Dade Community College, he was known as Mick the Quick and was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves. He retired with a .295 average, 1,660 hits and 267 steals. When Reggie Jackson told a reporter he had an IQ of 160, Rivers answered, "Out of what, a thousand?" His final major league game came on September 30, 1984, when the Rangers lost 1-0 to Mike Witt's perfect game for the Angels. After baseball he trained racehorses in his native Florida. In 2007 he was honored with teammates from the 1977 champions at the Yankees' Old Timers Game.
