1978 Topps #60 Thurman Munson

About Thurman Munson
In 1977 Munson hit .308 with 18 home runs and 100 RBIs. He became the first catcher since Bill Dickey in 1936-1939 to bat .300 with 100 RBIs three years running. He had urged George Steinbrenner to sign Reggie Jackson, but the two feuded after Jackson's 'straw that stirs the drink' interview. In the World Series Munson hit .320 and caught four of six runners trying to steal in the first four games. The Yankees won in six. His Yankees card is #60.
Thurman Munson caught for the New York Yankees in all 11 of his seasons, 1969 through 1979, and hit .292 with 113 home runs and 701 RBIs. The Yankees took him fourth overall in the 1968 draft out of Kent State, where he had been a College All-American. He was the 1970 American League Rookie of the Year and the 1976 MVP, won three Gold Gloves and made seven All-Star teams. Billy Martin named him captain before the 1976 season, the first Yankees captain since Lou Gehrig, and New York won three straight pennants and the 1977 and 1978 World Series. He was the second catcher, after Johnny Bench, to win a Rookie of the Year award, an MVP award, a Gold Glove and a World Series title. Munson bought a Cessna Citation jet so he could fly home to his family in Canton on off-days, and on August 2, 1979, he died at 32 when it crashed short of the runway while he practiced landings at Akron-Canton airport. The Yankees retired number 15 at once and dedicated a plaque to him in Monument Park. In 2000 he joined the inaugural class of the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame.
