About Don Sutton

Sutton worked 240 1/3 innings for the 1977 Dodgers, finishing 14-8 with a 3.18 ERA. He beat Philadelphia with a complete game in the NLCS and went 1-0 in 16 World Series innings against the Yankees. His 1978 Topps #310 carried an All-Star designation. In August 1978, his published remark that Reggie Smith was the Dodgers' best player prompted a clubhouse fight with Steve Garvey before a game against the Mets.

Don Sutton pitched 23 major league seasons from 1966 through 1988, including 16 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Born in Clio, Alabama, to teenage sharecroppers, he grew up in the Florida panhandle. He signed with Los Angeles in September 1964 for an estimated $15,000 bonus and reached the majors after one minor league season. Sutton worked at least 200 innings in 20 of his first 21 seasons; the exception was the strike-shortened 1981 season. He finished with a 324-256 record and a 3.26 ERA. His career totals included 58 shutouts and 3,574 strikeouts. A four-time All-Star, he used a fastball and curve early in his career, later adding a slider, screwball and changeup. Opponents repeatedly accused him of scuffing baseballs. After his first Dodgers tenure, he pitched for Houston, Milwaukee, Oakland and California, earning his 300th victory with the Angels on June 18, 1986. He returned to Los Angeles for his final season in 1988. The National Baseball Hall of Fame elected Sutton in 1998, and the Dodgers retired his number that year. He later broadcast Braves games and entered the Braves Hall of Fame in 2015 for that work.
