About this card

This is one of the 25 manager cards. Team cards and manager cards are separate cards this year: every club has a team card, and every club except the Milwaukee Brewers has a manager card - George Bamberger was hired in late January 1978, too late to be included.

About Tom Lasorda

In 1978 Lasorda's Dodgers went 95-67 and won a second straight National League pennant before losing the World Series to the Yankees again. That year he directed an obscenity-filled tirade at reporter Paul Olden, who had asked him about Dave Kingman's three home runs against the Dodgers that day. Topps gave him his own manager card in the 1978 set, #189.

Tommy Lasorda was a left-handed pitcher who managed the Los Angeles Dodgers for 20 seasons, 1976 through 1996, a fiery motivator known for fierce loyalty to his players. As a big-league pitcher he went 0-4 with a 6.48 ERA in 26 games for Brooklyn and Kansas City. His one start for the 1955 Dodgers ended after the first inning, when he tied a major-league record with three wild pitches, and in June he was sent down to clear a roster spot for Sandy Koufax. In the minors he struck out 25 batters in a 15-inning game for Schenectady in 1948. He later won 107 games for the Montreal Royals, the most in that club's history. After scouting from 1960 and managing in the Dodgers' farm system, he succeeded Walter Alston on September 29, 1976. He won 1,599 games, four National League pennants and two World Series. Before Game 4 of the 1988 Series he railed in the clubhouse about Bob Costas's criticism of the Dodger offense, and the underdog Dodgers beat Oakland in five games. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1997, his first year of eligibility, and managed the United States to Olympic gold at Sydney in 2000.
