1978 Topps #311 Jose Baez

About Jose Baez
Baez began 1978 on the Seattle roster and hit .160 in 50 at-bats over 23 games. The Mariners sent him to St. Louis for a player to be named later, eventually revealed to be Mike Potter, and he spent the rest of the season with Triple-A Springfield. #311 is his rookie card in the 1978 Topps set.
Jose Baez was a Dominican second baseman who played 114 major league games, all for the Seattle Mariners in 1977 and 1978. The Los Angeles Dodgers signed him as an amateur free agent in 1972, and the Mariners bought him from the Dodgers in 1976. He went into the 1977 spring training as the favorite for the second base job. On April 6, 1977, in his debut against the California Angels, he delivered the first hit in Mariners history. He finished that first season at .259 with 14 doubles and 17 RBIs. Born on December 31, 1953, in San Cristobal, he is a cousin of major leaguers Andy Mota, Jose Mota and Manny Mota. His last big league game came on June 6, 1978. He finished with a .245 career average, one home run and 19 RBIs.
