1978 Topps #278 Enrique Romo

About Enrique Romo
Romo began 1977 in Seattle's rotation before a hamstring injury interrupted his third start. He returned as a reliever and led the Mariners with 16 saves, finishing with a 2.83 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 114 1/3 innings. His 1978 Topps rookie card carried #278.
Enrique Romo pitched 6 major league seasons with Seattle and Pittsburgh, relying on a screwball, changing speeds and varied arm angles. The right-hander spent 11 years in Mexican professional baseball before joining the expansion Mariners in 1977 at age 29. His older brother Vicente also pitched in the majors. Romo had won 20 games with a 1.89 ERA for Mexico City in 1976, striking out 239 batters in 233 innings. He later worked in Pittsburgh's bullpen during its 1979 championship season. His major league totals were 44 wins, 52 saves and a 3.45 ERA in 350 pitching appearances. The Mexican Baseball Hall of Fame inducted him in 2003.
