About Rennie Stennett

The ankle left Stennett with a bone spur and restrictions on how often he could play. He started 79 games at second base and six at third. He hit .243 with three home runs in 106 games as the Pirates finished second to the Phillies for the third straight year. His 1978 Topps card, #165, shows him with Pittsburgh.

Rennie Stennett was a second baseman who spent nine seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates and two with the San Francisco Giants. Born in Colon, Panama, and raised in the Canal Zone, he grew up in Rod Carew's neighborhood, attended Carew's high school, and pitched to future Pirates catcher Manny Sanguillen on a sandlot team. Scout C. Herbert Raybourn signed him, and the move from outfield to second base came in the Florida Instructional League after 1970. He debuted on July 10, 1971, and on September 1 of that year was in the lineup when Pittsburgh became the first major league team to open a game with an all-minority nine. A hustling leadoff man, he drove in a career-high 62 runs in 1975. He was on the 1979 World Series champions, then took a five-year, $3 million contract from San Francisco through the re-entry draft. The Giants released him on April 2, 1982. He finished with a .274 average, 1,239 hits and 41 home runs, played in Mexico, and signed again with the Pirates in 1989 at 38.
