1978 Topps #283 Omar Moreno

About Omar Moreno
Moreno stole 71 bases in 1978, a Pirates record at the time, and scored 95 runs. He batted .235 over 155 games and drew 81 walks, working his average back from .198 at the end of May. Card #283 shows the Pittsburgh center fielder.
Omar Moreno was a left-handed center fielder from Panama and the leadoff man for the Pittsburgh Pirates' 1979 World Series champions. Pirates scout Howie Haak noticed his speed when he was 15, and he reached Pittsburgh in September 1975. He was the regular center fielder from 1977, led the majors in steals in 1978 and the National League in 1979, and in 1980 stole 96, a Pirates record and one short of Ron LeFlore's 97. He played all 162 games in both 1979 and 1980 and led the league in at bats each year. He was named to The Sporting News All-Star team in 1979. He signed with Houston after 1982, was traded to the Yankees in 1983 for Jerry Mumphrey, played briefly for Kansas City in 1985, and finished with Atlanta in 1986. He retired with 487 stolen bases and later managed Panama at the 2003 Baseball World Cup.
