About this card

This is one of the 26 team cards, one for every club. Team cards and manager cards are separate cards this year, and every club except the Milwaukee Brewers also has a manager card - George Bamberger was hired in late January 1978, too late to be included.

The story on this card

Boston won 97 games in 1977 and still finished 2 1/2 back of the Yankees, tied for second in the American League East. The offense led the league with 213 home runs, 33 of them in one ten-game span. Boston led the division as late as August 22, and a rained-out October 2 game against Baltimore was never made up. On June 18 at Fenway Park, a Jim Rice hit to right led Yankees manager Billy Martin to pull Reggie Jackson mid-inning, and the two nearly fought in the Yankee dugout on national television; Boston won 10-4. Don Zimmer managed a roster that included Hall of Famers Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk, Jim Rice and Fergie Jenkins. Card #424 is the Red Sox team card in the 1978 Topps set.
