About this card

This is one of the 26 team cards, one for every club. Team cards and manager cards are separate cards this year, and every club except the Milwaukee Brewers also has a manager card - George Bamberger was hired in late January 1978, too late to be included.

The story on this card

The 1977 White Sox, called the South Side Hitmen, hit 192 home runs, a team record that stood until 1996. Bill Veeck figured he could not compete with bigger-spending clubs for free agents, so he rented players instead, trading for Richie Zisk and Oscar Gamble with one year left on their contracts. Bob Lemon's club went 90-72 and took first place in the AL West on July 1, holding it until August 12, then finished third, 12 games behind Kansas City. On April 7 the White Sox played the first game in Blue Jays history and lost 9-5 in Toronto. Some Royals players resented the curtain calls fans demanded after White Sox home runs, and on August 5 White Sox pitcher Bart Johnson and Royals catcher Darrell Porter had a fistfight in Kansas City. Topps #66 is the White Sox team card for 1978, and the club drew 1,657,135 to Comiskey Park in 1977.
