1978 Topps #65 Ken Singleton

About Ken Singleton
Elbow surgery after the 1977 season repaired an old injury from his amateur pitching days, and Singleton then hit .293 with 20 home runs and 81 RBI for Baltimore. He was playing under the five-year contract he had signed in spring training 1977. Earl Weaver called him the kind of hitter who could start a rally by getting on base or end one by driving in the winning run. His 1978 Topps card is #65.
Ken Singleton was a switch-hitting outfielder who played 15 seasons, 1970 to 1984, for the New York Mets, Montreal Expos and Baltimore Orioles. Raised in Mount Vernon, New York, he took up switch-hitting in the Bronx Federation League and spent a year on a Hofstra basketball scholarship before the Mets took him third overall in the January 1967 draft. He debuted on June 24, 1970, and his best Montreal season was 1973. He spent ten years in Baltimore, where he was an All-Star in 1977, 1979 and 1981 and finished second to Don Baylor in the 1979 American League MVP vote. He played on the 1979 and 1983 Orioles pennant winners; the 1983 club won the World Series. He won the Roberto Clemente Award in 1982 and entered the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 1986. His career line was 2,029 hits and a .282 average in 2,082 games. He hit 246 home runs and drove in 1,065 runs. He then broadcast for the Yankees from 1997 to 2021.
