1978 Topps #367 Rick Dempsey

About Rick Dempsey
Dempsey played 136 games in 1978, 135 of them behind the plate, and batted .259. He had 114 hits and six home runs, and his seven stolen bases were up from two the year before. Card #367 shows him with the Baltimore Orioles.
Rick Dempsey caught in the major leagues for 24 seasons, from a 1969 debut with the Minnesota Twins to a final game with the Baltimore Orioles in 1992. He was a defensive catcher, valued for handling pitchers, a strong arm and agility behind the plate, and he finished with a .233 average, 96 home runs and 1,093 hits. The Orioles used him as their starting catcher for ten and a half seasons after a June 1976 trade, and no one caught more games for the club. He batted .385 in the 1983 World Series and was named its Most Valuable Player, and he was a Dodgers backup on another World Series winner in 1988. His rain-delay pantomimes, ending in a belly slide on the tarpaulin, were a Baltimore trademark. The Orioles inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 1997. He later managed in the minors and coached and broadcast for the Orioles.
