1978 Topps #237 Rich Dauer

About Rich Dauer
Everyday second baseman by 1978, Dauer set records for the position with 86 consecutive errorless games and 425 straight errorless chances, passing the 418 of Ken Hubbs, a fellow Colton High graduate. The run ended in the next-to-last game, on a throw to first baseman Eddie Murray. He hit .264 in 133 games, 52 of them at third base. His #237 card shows him with the Orioles.
Rich Dauer spent all ten of his major league seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, a sure-handed second baseman who also filled in at third. A first-round pick out of Southern California in 1974 (24th overall), he had won College World Series titles with the Trojans in 1973 and 1974. He debuted on September 11, 1976, with a single in his first at-bat, played 1,140 games, and batted .257 before his final game on September 29, 1985. Jim Palmer gave him the nickname Wacko for his sense of humor, and in 1983 Ken Singleton cast him as Larry beside Todd Cruz and Rick Dempsey in the Orioles' Three Stooges bottom of the order. Baltimore won that year's World Series. As a coach he spent 19 seasons in the majors with several clubs, finishing as first base coach of the 2017 World Series champion Astros. He also managed San Antonio to the 2013 Texas League title and entered the Orioles Hall of Fame in 2012. He died on February 3, 2025.
