1978 Topps #9 Doug DeCinces

About Doug DeCinces
The 1978 season was DeCinces's best in Baltimore. He hit .286 with career highs of 28 home runs and 80 RBI. He was Player of the Month in July with 10 homers and 31 RBI, and he closed the year with a 21-game hitting streak. On May 28 he refused manager Earl Weaver's order to play second base, and the two nearly came to blows in the dugout. Card #9 shows him with the Orioles.
Doug DeCinces was a right-handed third baseman who played 15 seasons, 1973 to 1987, nine with the Baltimore Orioles, six with the California Angels and four games with the St. Louis Cardinals. He succeeded Brooks Robinson at third base in Baltimore, bridging the years between Robinson and Cal Ripken Jr. He hit 237 home runs with a .259 average, won the 1982 Silver Slugger Award at third base after hitting 30 home runs for the Angels, and was an American League All-Star in 1983. Both clubs later ranked him among their top 20 players, and the Orioles inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2006. After leaving the majors he played the 1988 season for the Yakult Swallows in Japan and later advised on the film Mr. Baseball.
