1978 Topps #211 Earl Weaver

About this card
This is one of the 25 manager cards. Team cards and manager cards are separate cards this year: every club has a team card, and every club except the Milwaukee Brewers has a manager card - George Bamberger was hired in late January 1978, too late to be included.
About Earl Weaver
Weaver's 1977 Orioles went 97-64 and finished second in the American League East. Both the Associated Press and The Sporting News named him Manager of the Year. His 1978 Topps manager card is #211 with Baltimore; that season his club went 90-71 and finished fourth.
Earl Weaver managed the Baltimore Orioles from July 1968 through 1982 and again in 1985-1986, compiling a 1,480-1,060 record. He played second base in the minors from 1948 to 1960 and began managing as a player-manager in 1956. After two winning seasons at Triple-A Rochester, he joined Baltimore as first-base coach and replaced Hank Bauer as manager on July 11, 1968. Weaver kept cards and notebooks recording how individual hitters fared against particular pitchers, using those matchups to set his lineups. He also platooned Gary Roenicke and John Lowenstein in left field. Known as the Earl of Baltimore, he was ejected 94 times during his major league managerial career. The Veterans Committee elected him to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996.
