About Danny Ozark
Manager card #631 came out after the 1977 NLCS, when the Phillies were poised to take a 2-1 lead over the Dodgers until Los Angeles scored three runs in the ninth inning of Game 3. The next night, in a driving rainstorm, Tommy John pitched a complete game and the Dodgers won the series three games to one. The 1978 club slipped to 90 wins but held the division by a game and a half.
Danny Ozark managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 1973 to 1979 and led them to National League East titles in 1976, 1977 and 1978. Born Orzechowski in Buffalo, he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers as a teenager, fought at the Battle of the Bulge, and played first base in the minors for 18 seasons, hitting over 200 home runs. He began managing in 1956 with Wichita Falls, won a division title with the 1963 Spokane Indians, and joined Walter Alston's Los Angeles Dodgers staff as a coach in 1965. Philadelphia named him manager on November 7, 1972. The 1976 club won 101 games, a franchise record at the time, and repeated with 101 in 1977, but the Phillies lost the NLCS each year. They lost again in 1978, making Ozark the first manager to lose three straight championship series. Dallas Green replaced him on August 31, 1979. Ozark returned to the Dodgers as a coach in 1980, including the 1981 World Series champions, then for the Giants in 1983 and 1984, finishing 1984 as interim manager at 24-32. His malapropisms were widely quoted. He died in Vero Beach in 2009 and entered the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
