About Dave Tomlin

Tomlin appeared in 57 games for Cincinnati in 1978, all in relief, and went 9-1 with a 5.78 ERA. He saved four games and pitched 62 1/3 innings. His Topps card, #86, still shows him with San Diego, the club he had pitched for through 1977.

Dave Tomlin was a left-handed reliever who pitched 13 major league seasons between 1972 and 1986 for the Cincinnati Reds, San Diego Padres, Montreal Expos and Pittsburgh Pirates. Born in Maysville, Kentucky, and a graduate of West Union High School in Ohio, he was drafted by the Reds in the 29th round in 1967. After 19 games for Cincinnati over 1972 and 1973, he went to San Diego in a trade that sent Bobby Tolan with him and brought Clay Kirby to the Reds. He pitched regularly for the Padres from 1974 to 1977, and his two best seasons by WAR were 1977 and 1978. He returned to Cincinnati for 1978-80. In the postseason he appeared in four National League Championship Series games, one in 1973 and three in 1979. He finished with a 25-12 record, a 3.82 ERA and 12 saves. After playing he coached pitchers in the Expos and Braves systems, joined the Boston Red Sox organization in 1998, and managed the Rookie-level Gulf Coast Red Sox from 2006 to 2010.
