About Ron Fairly

Fairly divided his 1977 Toronto season, 132 games in all, among designated hitter, first base and the outfield, and scored 60 runs. He batted .279 with 19 home runs and 64 RBI. His 1978 Topps card, #85, carried the Blue Jays name.

Ronald Ray Fairly grew up in Long Beach, California, and played center field for USC's 1958 College World Series champions. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a $75,000 bonus through scout Harold "Lefty" Phillips, choosing to stay near home despite a larger Chicago offer. Carl Furillo taught him how to play right field in National League parks; Fairly later wore Furillo's number 6 as a tribute. His 21 major league seasons included time with six clubs and All-Star selections for Montreal and Toronto. He finished with 1,913 hits, 215 home runs, 1,044 RBI and a .266 average. After playing, he broadcast games for the Angels, Giants and Mariners. Fairly died on October 30, 2019.
