1978 Topps #267 Doug Ault

About Doug Ault
Ault hit .245 with 11 home runs in 129 games for Toronto in 1977. A three-run homer off Wayne Garland on April 27 set up a 6-5 extra-inning win over Cleveland, and a single on June 8 spoiled Nolan Ryan's perfect-game bid. He made the Topps All-Rookie team, which is why his Blue Jays card, #267, carries the Rookie Cup.
Doug Ault was a first baseman who hit the first two home runs in Toronto Blue Jays history, on April 7, 1977, in the franchise's first game, a 9-5 win over the White Sox. A Beaumont, Texas native, he starred at Panola Junior College and Texas Tech, led the nation with a .475 average in 1972, and signed with the Rangers in 1973. He debuted with Texas on September 9, 1976, and Toronto took him 32nd in the expansion draft that November. He tied Ron Fairly for the 1977 Blue Jays lead with 64 RBIs, a club rookie record for 25 years. John Mayberry's arrival cut his playing time in 1978, he spent 1979 at Syracuse, and his final major league game came on October 5, 1980. He hit .236 with 17 home runs in 256 games, played for Hanshin in Japan in 1981, and then managed in the Blue Jays system, winning the International League pennant and Manager of the Year honors with Syracuse in 1985. He died in December 2004.
