About Sam Ewing

Ewing's 1978 was a pinch-hitting role: 40 games and 56 at-bats, with seven starts at designated hitter and two in right field. He hit .179 with two home runs, one of them a two-run shot in his only plate appearance against a left-hander all year. His 1978 Topps card, #344, carries the Blue Jays.

Sam Ewing was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and first baseman who appeared in 167 major league games for the White Sox and Blue Jays between 1973 and 1978. An All-American at the University of Tennessee, he hit .412 in college, with a high of .464 as a junior, and played for the U.S. team at the 1970 World Amateur games in Colombia. He was drafted in the first round by both the Expos (1969) and the White Sox. His first major league game ended with four strikeouts against Nolan Ryan, who struck out 17 that day. Toronto selected him in the 1976 expansion draft, and in 1977 he hit .287 in 97 games. Used mainly against right-handers, he had 20 career at-bats against left-handers. After his American League career he played in Japan for the Nippon-Ham Fighters, then managed the Appleton Foxes of the Midwest League.
