1978 Topps #408 Joe Zdeb

About Joe Zdeb
Zdeb started in left field against Detroit on April 7, 1977, collecting a single and scoring a run in his major league debut. He batted .297 in 105 games that season while platooning with Tom Poquette. His Royals rookie card was 1978 Topps #408.
Joe Zdeb was a right-handed outfielder for Kansas City who shared a minor league infield with George Brett before moving to the outfield. A baseball and football player at Maine South High School in Illinois, he signed with the Royals after they selected him in the fourth round in 1971, giving up a commitment to play football at Missouri. At Billings, a bad-hop grounder broke his nose; Brett moved from shortstop to third base while Zdeb was sidelined. Zdeb later studied at the University of Illinois during offseasons and worked as an insurance broker and financial adviser after baseball.
