1978 Topps #360 Mike Schmidt

About Mike Schmidt
Schmidt had 26 home runs by the 1977 All-Star break. On July 8 at Pittsburgh, after his second hit-by-pitch in four days, he accepted Bruce Kison's challenge to fight, and Ed Ott tackled him and fractured his finger. The injury hampered his swing, yet he finished with 38 home runs and a second Gold Glove before the Dodgers beat the Phillies in the NLCS. #360 shows him with Philadelphia. In spring training of 1978, Danny Ozark named him team captain.
Mike Schmidt was a third baseman who played all 18 of his major league seasons, 1972 through 1989, with the Philadelphia Phillies. He hit 548 home runs, led the National League in home runs eight times and in RBIs four times, won three MVP awards (1980, 1981 and 1986) and took ten Gold Gloves. He is the only infielder with ten Gold Gloves and at least 500 home runs. A Dayton, Ohio native, he was an All-American shortstop at Ohio University before the Phillies drafted him in the second round in 1971, 30th overall, one pick after the Royals took George Brett. He stood far back in the batter's box, which made him hard to jam inside. In the 1980 World Series he hit two home runs and drove in seven runs against Kansas City, and the Phillies won their first championship. He played mostly first base in 1985 before moving back to third, and he reached 500 home runs on April 18, 1987, at Pittsburgh. He announced his retirement on May 29, 1989, in San Diego. The Phillies retired number 20 in 1990, and he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1995 in his first year of eligibility. He holds the club records for games, home runs and RBI.
