About this card

The story on this card

The 1977 Oakland Athletics finished last in the American League West three years after winning the World Series. The team went 63-98, half a game behind the expansion Seattle Mariners, with one Minnesota game called off by weather and never made up. Most of the veterans who reached free agency after 1976 had left. Hall of Famer Dick Allen was on the roster. Jack McKeon was fired on June 10 with the club at 26-27 and replaced by former Arizona State coach Bobby Winkles, who went 37-71. The club scored 605 runs and drew 495,599 to the Coliseum. After the season Charlie Finley tried to send Vida Blue to the Reds for a lesser player and cash, but Bowie Kuhn vetoed it, and Blue went across the bay to San Francisco instead. The Athletics team card is 1978 Topps #577.
