1978 Topps #578 Buzz Capra

About Buzz Capra
The Braves released Capra at the end of 1978 spring training, and he retired as a player soon after. His 1978 Topps card, #578, still lists him with Atlanta. Across 1977 he made 16 starts and struck out 100 batters in 139 1/3 innings.
Buzz Capra was a right-handed pitcher for the New York Mets (1971-73) and Atlanta Braves (1974-77) who led the majors with a 2.28 ERA in 1974. A Chicago native and Lane Tech shortstop, he turned pitcher at Illinois State, going 17-5 with a 1.58 ERA and leading the Redbirds to the 1969 NCAA Division II championship. The Mets drafted him that year. After the Braves bought his contract in spring 1974 he moved from the bullpen into the rotation, won NL Player of the Month in June and made the All-Star team. Arm trouble that began late in 1974 ended his 1975 season on June 8, and he threw 9 1/3 innings in 1976. He finished 31-37 with a 3.87 ERA and 5 saves, and played his last game on September 26, 1977. He later coached at Northeastern Illinois for five years and worked as a minor league pitching coach. He entered the Illinois State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1975 and the Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in 2021.
