About this card

This is one of the 26 team cards, one for each club, and each also carries the club's manager - there are no separate manager cards in 1979.

The story on this card

Fourth place in the American League East was the Orioles' 1978 result, a 90-71 year at Memorial Stadium in which they hit 154 home runs and drew 1,051,724. Earl Weaver, whose formula was pitching and three-run homers, had managed the club since July 1968; the roster included Hall of Famers Jim Palmer and Eddie Murray. The club bounced back in 1979 with 102 wins and the American League pennant, and Weaver was named Manager of the Year by the Associated Press and The Sporting News. Team card #689 pairs the club with Weaver, who reached the Hall of Fame in 1996 without a major league at-bat.

Earl Weaver managed Baltimore to four American League pennants and the 1970 World Series title. He used detailed pitcher-hitter records to arrange his lineups and entered the Hall of Fame in 1996.
