The story on this card
Boston led the American League East by 14 games in July 1978 and stood 62-28 on July 19. A four-game Yankee sweep at Fenway Park in September, 42-9 on aggregate, left the teams tied at 86-56, and the series became known as the Boston Massacre. Both clubs finished 99-63, and New York won the one-game playoff at Fenway 5-4 behind a Bucky Dent home run, leaving Boston at 99-64 under Don Zimmer. Jim Rice won the AL MVP with 46 home runs and 139 RBI, Dennis Eckersley went 20-8, and Carlton Fisk and Carl Yastrzemski joined Rice on the American League All-Star team. Card #214 is the Red Sox team card with Zimmer.
Don Zimmer played winter baseball for Santurce in Puerto Rico. The infielder batted .400 with three home runs and was named MVP of the 1955 Caribbean Series.
