1979 Topps #213 Bill Travers

About Bill Travers
Travers posted a 3.89 ERA with nine complete games in 1979, as Milwaukee finished second in the American League East, the highest finish in franchise history to that point. On July 29 he laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Jim Wohlford to second against the Yankees, his only career plate appearance. Card #213 shows him with the Brewers.
Bill Travers was a left-handed starter who spent nine seasons in the majors, 1974 to 1983, and seven of them with the Milwaukee Brewers. A Norwood, Massachusetts, native who went 13-0 as a high school senior, he was a sixth-round Brewers pick in 1970. Bone chips and an ulnar nerve operation in the minors nearly ended his career before he reached Milwaukee in 1974. In 1976 he led the club with 15 wins and a 2.81 ERA, threw 240 innings and made the only All-Star team of his career. Arm trouble returned in 1977 and required a second ulnar transfer, performed by Dr. Frank Jobe. He rebounded to win 14 games in 1979 and 12 in 1980. He signed with the California Angels as a free agent in January 1981, but calcium deposits in his elbow limited him to four games in 1981 and ten in 1983, and he missed all of 1982. He finished 65-71 with a 4.10 ERA and was an inaugural member of the Brewers Wall of Honor in 2014.
