1979 Topps #376 Gorman Thomas

About Gorman Thomas
Batting cleanup for much of the year, Thomas hit 45 home runs and drove in 123 runs, both career highs. His 175 strikeouts tied the league record, and he finished seventh in MVP voting as the Brewers went 95-66 and took second place in the East. Topps #376 lists the Milwaukee Brewers.
Gorman Thomas was a right-handed center fielder and power hitter who became one of the Milwaukee Brewers' most popular players. The expansion Seattle Pilots made him their first-ever draft pick in 1969, and the franchise became the Brewers before he reached the majors in 1973. He led the American League in home runs in 1979 and again in 1982, when he tied Reggie Jackson at 39. He struck out often and hit .225 for his career, with 268 home runs and 782 RBI. He made the 1981 All-Star team and played in the 1981 Division Series and in the 1982 postseason, when Milwaukee won the ALCS and lost the World Series to St. Louis in seven games. Later stops were Cleveland and Seattle, where he won The Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year award in 1985, and he finished with the Brewers in 1986. He was elected to the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.
